The Emergent Literacy Project at the University of Idaho was designed to increase emergent literacy activities in Head Start classrooms and preschools. Emergent literacy includes activities in which young children participate as they become readers and writers. Emergent suggests something that is dynamic and becoming, not a specific point in time. Literacy refers to the interrelatedness of the language arts and includes reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing.
